Let’s make a toast for Scandinavian Glasswork
One of the most distinctive and acclaimed facets of the Scandinavian region is undoubtedly the exceptional quality of its glasswork. From delicate ashtrays to a diverse range of glassware designed to enhance any table and home, Scandinavian glass, originating from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, gained renown in the 1920s. Orrefors led the movement, with prominent designers like Simon Gate and Edward Hald. In Sweden, Flygsfors and Kosta also contributed distinguished designs, while in Norway, Hadelands stood out with designers like Arne Jon Jutrem and Severin Bjorby. In Denmark, Kastrup and Holmegaards merged in 1954, featuring notable designers such as Per Lutken and Michael Bang. In Finland, the famous (And one of our favorite brands) Karhulla Iittala boasted renowned designers like Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva, known for innovative designs that left a lasting impact from the 1950s onwards. Scandinavian neutrality during the world wars allowed for the development of harmonious designs during a period of limited activity in the glass industry in Europe.
